Is Upgrading to Windows 10 Right for Law Firms?

by | Jun 25, 2015 | Security

Windows 10 is releasing on July 29th in 190 markets and at this point every Windows PC from 7 to 8.1 has received an update notification on that status bar to get your free update. The truth is that if you have 7, 8 or 8.1, Windows 10 is free, but do you really want to upgrade your firm to a brand new untested operating system? Rekall says not right now.

New operating systems need time to work out the bugs and most of all make sure they are compatible with your law firm applications. You can bet that Lexis Nexis has no sure compatibility for Windows 10 on any of their platforms may they be PCLaw, Juris or Time Matters. The same can be said for document management systems Worldox and Worksite.

A good rule of thumb is to wait 1yr to see how good or bad a Windows operating system is before upgrading. These days Windows 8.1 is not a bad choice and Windows 7 is still awesome. Don’t be a Microsoft guinea pig, wait a year for the world to find out if this operating system is ready for prime time. Then, if you have an old PC consider the Windows 10 upgrade. This is what we’re advising our law firms to do.

As CEO of Rekall Technologies, I’ve been helping small business owners simplify their technology since 2011. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how IT becomes frustrating, time-consuming, and a constant distraction from running a business. That experience is what drove me to build Rekall differently. I didn’t want clients adjusting their businesses to fit their IT—I built services that adapt to how real businesses actually operate. My philosophy is simple: technology should be secure, stable, and effectively invisible. When IT is done right, it stays out of the way and gives you the freedom to focus on your clients, your team, and growing your business with confidence.
